Raleigh Rose Garden Stormwater Retrofits
In 2020, Fluvial Solutions made stormwater infrastructure improvements and constructed a planted bioretention cell—commonly referred to as a rain garden—at the Raleigh Rose Garden. Careful grading and infrastructure improvements were made to direct water towards the rain garden to provide temporary storage and treatment of stormwater runoff. Formerly the location of the NC State Fair (1873 to 1925), later used as a tank training facility during World War I, the Raleigh Rose Garden is located in a depression that was too muddy for home development. Instead in the 1930s the park became the home for the Raleigh Little Theatre, an outdoor amphitheater, and 1,200 rose bushes of 60 different varieties. The project has greatly helped to reduce the flooding and wet soil conditions that have plagued this treasured park in the heart of Raleigh for nearly a century.
