Pigeon House Creek Urban Stream Stabilization

Fluvial Solutions completed innovative repair and stabilization work on Pigeon House Creek just downstream of The Village District shopping center in Raleigh, N.C. in 2010. Pigeon House drains a 170-acre watershed of mostly impervious surfaces and is confined to a narrow riparian corridor that includes numerous water, sewer and other utilities. The stabilization measures included innovative double drop cross vane structures that were constructed from concrete rather than boulders. In addition, a 12-foot wall with boulder toe was built to stabilize an eroding streambank while minimizing impacts to mature trees located in the Edma Metz Park. The surface of the wall was sculpted by artists to resemble natural rock.
