Cleveland County Water Supply
Fluvial Solutions is currently overseeing the construction of a two-year project to construct improvements to the Cleveland County water supply system located in Lawndale, N.C. Located at the confluence of Knob Creek and the First Broad River, the water supply system provides water for 51,000 customers including several counties, municipalities and parts of South Carolina. At the intake site, the First Broad River dumps heavy sand loads that are supplied by the 190 square mile upstream watershed, which requires periodic removal. Fluvial Solutions is currently constructing a 25-foot concrete weir with a hydraulic gate that is designed to facilitate flushing out the accumulated sand. The improvements will ease the cost and effort of removing this material. In addition, a 10-foot high, 170-foot long boulder wall has been constructed to stabilize a collapsing bank on the river just upstream of the water intake. The new wall remained stable during the recent flooding associated with Hurricane Helene.
